St. Margaret of Hungary Parish 1919-2009

Well, one does not expect a parish (stone says church, there is a difference, you can see the parish had moved from the old neighbourhood by Buckeye Road to the suburbs). A parish is a corporate person. 

Cleveland had a tyrant of a bishop, Richard Lennon, who will be chiefly remembered for closing 58 parishes in Cleveland, after he closed many in Boston before he came to Ohio. He especially liked closing ethnic (national) parishes, as many American bishops have done. Lennon also disposed of their assets. He controlled as many purse strings as he could gather. Some were of parishes, some of organisations, and some of lives.

This stone is in All Saints Cemetery Northfield, near the Nativity of Mary mausoleum. I wonder if he knew this was done. Can't really ask him now, he is completely gaga, i hear.

On Detroit Road there had been a cemetery. In 1957 the bodies were buried elsewhere and the headstones came to Lakewood Historical Society.

Independent Order of Odd Fellows 1917

In Glendale Cemetery, there are sections reserved for the Masons, and the Odd Fellows. In the late 19th century, the Odd Fellows were the largest fraternal lodge. The three links of the chain stand for  Friendship, Love and Truth.

building your own mausoleum

The most elaborate mausoleum in Glendale Akron is this one. Some have walls of solid stone, this one has stonework mudded in, and patterned. This was a personal project. There are Greek columns. There is a double eagle ornament. There is a walkway.

Walter A. Franklin *1868 was a plasterer, mason, and then in business with his brother a contractor, Franklin Brothers. Walter's mausoleum was built in 1910 (his first wife died that year), the outside statues were made in 1914. Walter died in in 1943. He had much opportunity to see his monument. His second wife lived an hundred years, she died in 1993. Inside there are three fine religious stained glass windows, one is of the Ascension of Jesus.

Outside are a pair of lion monuments, a male and cub, and a female and cub. On the sides are some mythical sea tableauxs? In the front below the lions there is a gorgon?
