Woodland Gatehouse

Recently, Woodland Cemetery has finished work on the rebuilt entrance. Cleveland's Erie Street, and Monroe Street have similar entrances. Because of the coronavirus estrangement, no grand public reveal has been done. Perhaps next year for Memorial Day? [foto 26 Nov. 2020]

There had also been a chapel, and a fountain on the property.

For years, original stones were in a mound in the interior of the cemetery. Some pieces were stolen by landscapers.

Kol Israel Holocaust Monument

Kol Israel began in 1959 with Cleveland survivors from the Holocaust/Shoah. 1961 they raised this monument in Zion Memorial Park Cemetery, Bedford Heights. It was a work of mercy. It is a place to remember and mourn the so many who did not have a respectful burial. On the Sunday between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur there is a memorial service, in which Kaddish is said.

Seventeen foot obelisk of French Creek granite is topped with Stars of David, on either side are  fourteen foot panels.

"...ashes of our brethren from the concentration camps..."
"For the dead and the living we must bear witness"
"I believe with perfect faith in the coming of the Messiah and though he may tarry i daily wait for his coming"

grave quotations

« Le cœur a ses raisons que la raison ne connaît point »
"The heart has its reasons which reason does not know"
Pensées, Blaise Pascal

«l'amor che move il sole e l'altre stelle»
"The love that moves the sun and the other stars"
(Paradiso, XXXIII, v. 145), last verse of  Divine Comedy, Dante Alighieri

« On ne voit bien qu'avec le cœur.  L'essentiel est invisible pour les yeux. »
"One sees clearly only with the heart. What is essential is invisible to the eye."
—"Le petit prince", Antoine de Saint Exupéry
Some people  have words they so loved, they want them on their gravestone. Often, it is a Bible verse; but there are thoughts of writers expressed in philosophical or poetic words.
"In the depth of winter, I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer"
Return to Tipasa (1952), Albert Camus
There is a bench by Wade Pond with the same words. [click]

and some are humourous:
"If we knew what we were doing it wouldn't be called research"

firehouse dog

It has been tradition for a dog to be at a firehouse. Years ago, the trucks were pulled by horses. Dalmatians, or coachman's dog, keep good company and pace with horses. Cleveland Fire Station 22 put a stone, and it looks like maybe a tree at one time, for their mascot.
