Gravestones, sometimes, tell history.  Sometimes a history hinted at, and known to only a few.

Kiska has no permanent population.  To divert attention from Midway, the Japanese captured the island June 6, 1942.  A naval weather detachment of ten men were captured.  The next day the island of Attu was taken.  In '43 Attu was retaken.   July 28th the Japanese deserted Kiska during fog.  August 15th 34,000 American, and Canadian troops  came to an empty island.  Some men died from booby traps left behind. 'Friendly fire' [a God awful euphemism for fratricide] saw 28 Americans, and 4 Canadians killed. 

The two islands (the only American territory occupied) has remnants of the occupation, and the bombings. Live ammunition remains.  The 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment returned to leave a plaque: 

 "To the men of Amphibious Task Force 9 who fell here August 1943 placed here August 1983 by 87th Mountain Infantry Regiment."

Malachi House

Malachi House monument dedicated 28 June 2025 during yearly internment ceremony at Lake View Cemetery Cleveland.  Beneath the upraised hands it reads, "We are held by many hands".  Malachi House is a hospice for the indigent.
 

Persepolis in Cleveland

A new monument is ready, and waiting for a day when the owner perishes. This winged lion, with  a bearded man's face stands guard. Such sculptures were found in Persepolis, when Alexander came and conquered.

On either short side of the monument are these three, almost like pall bearers.

Construction seems to be busy throughout Cleveland, well especially downtown, and University Circle. A big mausoleum is the first burial spots in a large section of Lake View.

The assembly phase is in progress. The delivered pieces are being laid out in order.

Lake View Cemetery is very proud of Daffodil Hill. A gift of six thousand bulbs initially from William Weir in 1941, and now well over one hundred thousand, and maybe fifty, or sixty thousand more bedded. When the yellow blanket opens up the joyful colour is enveloping.

A couple of posts ago, there is a foto of the first stage of scaffolding. With the orange screening the Garfield Monument looks like a business building, or hotel.

Some trees have good color

Lake View does maintain the grounds. There were men and equipment in several places to-day. They hired some serious tree trimmers.

Scaffold is neat, there is scaffold going up around the Garfield Monument, which is being cleaned. For a couple of weeks, the entrance will be closed; after that visitors can return while outside work will continue. There is an information tent nearby. We came with the hounds Friday, the guy there was happy to see us. He was bored, and once had a saluki. A family from out of town came by next, they expressedly came to tour the monument and were disappointed.

Before the scaffolding went up, a drone counted sixteen trees growing on the monument. Tuck pointing will be done.

Cleveland's Lake View Cemetery allows people to stroll with hounds. There is not much decoration around graves. But someone decided to decorate for St. Patrick's Day of the Irish.

On Election Day, at Cleveland's Lake View Cemetery, i saw a new stone memorial. The stele had a column on the left, and a painted diamond above the family name. There also was a bench. The married couple, look by the inscription, to be still alive. They can come and look at their memorial.

  If the diamond was like a base ball diamond, look just before first base.

 Part of the memorial was a bench with these words on top.

Yesterday would have been better, regarding leaf color.  This year, autumn leaves came late. High color came after the fourth week of October, and rain continued for days. Yesterday had that rare combination of sun and comfortable temperature. To-day, the rain was ended by dawn, and the temperature started out as warm, and there was continuous wind. The leaves falling was accelerated. Lake View Cemetery was still in very good color, maybe not to-morrow.

 

Haserot is a frozen food company. Someone left a pumpkin, perhaps for All Hallows.

Cassius demonstrates that black is colorful.

remembering Ness

Eliot Ness, prohibition agent agent in Chicago, safety director in Cleveland has his ashes interred in Cleveland's Lake View Cemetery. Some people leave mementos.

Someone left a card of police dog Clancy and his handler, and a police patch from New York City.
